“The Myers-Briggs is primarily concerned with the valuable differences in people that result from where they like to focus their attention, the way they like to take in information, the way they like to decide, and the kind of lifestyle they adopt." --Quote from the Foreword of the “Introduction to Type ” booklet by Isabel Briggs Myers Have you ever worked with someone, and no matter how hard you try, you simply cannot seem to communicate, or to develop a smooth working realtionship? Does it seem like you are speaking a different language? On the other hand, have you had the experience of working with a person, and it seems like you are 'always on the same page'? Everything seems to go easily, with very little discussion or disagreement? The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator¬Æ (MBTI ®) is one of the most widely used and scientifically validated personality profile tools in the world. It is used all over the globe to improve communication and make teams more effective. The MBTI ® is based on a theory of psychological types developed by the psychologist Carl Jung. Dr. Jung theorized that the personality consists of four functions: sensing, intuition, feeling, and thinking, and there is an introverted and an extraverted attitude for each function. Isabel Briggs and Katherine Briggs-Myers further refined the theory, and added the judging and perceiving orientation to make up the sixteen types represented on the MBTI ®. The essence of the theory is that seemingly random variations in behavior are due to basic differences in the way people use perception and judgment. Perception involves all of the ways of becoming aware of things, people, happenings, or ideas and judgment involves all of the ways of coming to conclusions about what has been perceived. Over 40 years of research and development have demonstrated the reliability and validity of the MBTI ®. Some 5 million people take the MBTI ® every year, making it the most popular personality tool in the world. The MBTI ® has 16 different personality types, each with its own characteristics and strengths. There are no right or wrong answers on the profile tool and no assumed "right" way to be. It is very important to remember that the MBTI ® is about preferences.Even though you have a defined “type ”, that does not mean you are not capable of accessing the other parts of the types if needed. It simply means that you prefer to use one more often then the other. This allows people to grow in their own self-understanding and to relate more effectively to others.
