#3 Multi National Pharmaceuticals Company Project B

The Situation:

As the result of a major acquisition, a decision was made to close a medium size biotechnology company and transfer all of its physical and intellectual assets to the acquiring firm. The timetable for this project was three months.

The AdVantage Consulting Solution:
Knowledge Management

After completing an initial assessment of the situation, a task force was recruited to develop a project plan. The team analyzed the issues and created a “dual team structure ”, which consisted of a similar team at each site for every asset to be transferred.

Training was designed and delivered to all team members (at the acquiring company) about sensitivity issues related to dealing with displaced employees. In addition, all teams were trained in the tools and techniques of Knowledge Management, and in ways to successfully extract both expert (the what) and tacit (the how) knowledge from the acquired company employees.

Training was implemented to help employees on both sides deal with issues of change and personal transition. Weekly update meetings were held to measure progress against goals.

The Results:

All physical and intellectual assets were effectively transferred within the three month project plan.

Because the knowledge transfer was so successful, one of the transferred cancer compounds was accelerated into late stage development.
